Can Birmingham City still achieve playoff dream?

Share

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies vows his side will “chase their playoff dream until impossible”.

The Blues ended their winless run with a 1-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers, after suffering three consecutive defeats prior to kick-off.

An early Patrick Roberts goal sealed the three points at St Andrews @ Knighthead Park to keep the Blues’ faint hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.

City currently sit in tenth, five points behind fellow promoted side Wrexham. However, the Red Dragons possess a game in hand over many of their top six rivals.

Davies was keen to point out that the Blues will chase their playoff dream until it is impossible.

“We want to finish as high as we possibly can, and we’ll chase it to the very end, trust me,” said Davies.

“But , the reality for me is very clear. This is an unforgiving division.

“We’ve shown we can really compete, we’ve had some big wins, we’ve had some fantastic performances.

We’ve had a few punches and a few setbacks along the way, but we’ve always responded to it.”

However, Davies played down the chances of his side finishing inside the playoff positions.

He said: “We’ve got 52 points now. I think the last time the team was in this league, it got 50 points.

“For the last decade, the team’s been fighting relegation in this league.

“So, we’re making great strides, is what I’d say.”

If Birmingham are to finish inside the Championship’s top six, they will have to do it the hard way.

A home game against Sheffield United precedes a run of three current top-six sides in April.

Blues will likely have to beat Ipswich, Wrexham and Hull if they are to have a chance of playing Premier League football next season.

Despite this, with nine games remaining, it is still very much possible that we could see Birmingham City return to the promised land for the first time since 2011.

However, it will require a monumental effort from all involved.
