Emily Brett’s hat-trick secured Derby women’s firsts’ opening win of the season against the University of Oxford.
The Notts County striker, who is in the final year of her PhD, showcased her skill at Kedleston Road in the first-round victory of the Women’s National Trophy.
Mark Russell’s team will now face the University of Liverpool firsts in the next round on Wednesday 26 November.
Brett’s first-time shot in the 15th minute provided the home side the first goal of the game as a quick Derby attack couldn’t be stopped by Oxford.
A deflected Lucy Trail shot then forced a save from Oxford goalkeeper Hannah Mourney late into the first half.
Lily Wondwossen’s well-placed pass then found Katie Glendening; however Millie Smith tipped her shot over the bar, keeping Derby ahead going into the break.
Oxford started the second half quicker with Smith pulling off another good save from Jordan di Verniero, who hit the post.
Brett extended the lead in the 55th minute as Mia Turner’s pinpoint cross was met with a looped header.
Oxford’s pressure then intensified however it was Brett who secured her hat-trick in the 75th through a chipped shot.
In the 80th minute Oxford grabbed a consolation as Glendening’s cross found di Verniero whose shot beat Smith.
Derby will look to build on an impressive 3-1 victory as they face Loughborough women’s thirds next week in the British Universities and Colleges Sports’ Midlands 1A league.
