Jinks: ‘intensity the key’ as Derby thirds adapt for rearranged match

Andre Llewellyn reports from Kedleston Road

Defender Charlie Jinks pinpointed intensity as the key factor behind Derby university men’s thirds’ 4-2 victory in their friendly against a development side.

The match between the two teams was arranged on Monday after Warwick men’s fourths forfeited their Midlands Conference Cup match against Derby.

Goals from Jeremy Omorodion and Kenta Sherra put the thirds 2-0 up not long into the second half as they seized control of the game.

However, the development side forced themselves back into the game as Ryan Hanks scored twice, albeit either side of a goal from Bernard Nsiah.

Jinks said: “We didn’t know we had them (Derby’s development side) until Monday evening, but we made sure to keep the intensity up in training.”

The Football Journalism student added that he and his teammates were able to take many things from this game that they could apply in the future.

“We did try out a new shape (3-5-2) so hopefully we can use that to play a wider shape and play in wider areas,” Jinks said.

In their attempts to make their winning position more comfortable with the extra goal, the thirds nearly conceded a third goal.

But Hanks was given offside before he squared for Ciaran Harrison to net.

“It was definitely a heart-in-mouth moment, but the result was never the biggest thing today,” Jinks added.

Toby Watson did indeed make it 4-2 in the final moments.
