Chesterfield, a small town in Derbyshire, is full of talent and charisma but there is a new band cooking up a big storm.
Little Rock are Chesterfield’s youngest rock stars, causing well-needed, enjoyable fun to every stage that they perform on.
Just six and nine-years-old, Brooklyn and Rowan are talented children performing all over Derbyshire in the summer. Recently, Little Rock performed at the Hunter-James fundraiser on May 5, 2024 – a fundraiser for a six-month-old baby boy who died from sepsis.
Little Rock brought joy to everyone who attended with comments following their performance such as ‘you guys were awesome!’
The duo performed songs such as It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll), Teenage Dirtbag, I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll, Summer of ’69, Paint It Black, and Wonderwall. These songs caused a sea of cheers to erupt from the crowd, cheering them on from the get-go.
Little Rock perform covers of great songs of old rock music such as Joan Jett, AC/DC, Guns N Roses, The Rolling Stones, The Cranberries, and Oasis, plus many more. The band is heavily inspired by the film School of Rock, starring Jack Black.
Together, they have performed five gigs together. Shedfest, hosted in New Whittington in Chesterfield last year, was their biggest gig yet playing to more than 50 people. This really brought up their confidence .
Rowan is a six-year-old drummer, bringing energy and a legendary presence to the stage wherever he goes. He constantly tries his hardest to keep up with his sister, Brooklyn, when they perform. The talented young lad has a bright future in music.
Brooklyn is just nine-years-old and sings and plays guitar in the band. She brings nothing but a rock ‘n’ roll vibe to stages everywhere, and is constantly practising guitar at home – showing her sheer dedication to music.
Brooklyn and Rowan both started learning to play their instruments through YouTube lessons that their dad showed them, with their dad Luke Humphries saying: “I have personally coached them through using YouTube, although I am not a musician and they are way better than me, I can only make them believe in themselves.” Howeveer, eventually the duo did get teachers. Brooklyn has been learning guitar for three years and Rowan has been learning to play the drums for a year and a half.
Sharing his thoughts about getting children into music, dad Luke said: “Children are absolutely incredible and I have learned on this journey that it is us that fail them by being distracted.
“We believe we are smart and they are not, but it’s completely the other way around. Children are made for greatness, they only need consistent guidance and belief and they can outshine us.”
The talented siblings also go busking in Chesterfield and Sheffield, spreading their name and filling people’s hearts full of joy and warmth. Seeing two very young children try and get out in the music industry just shows how much impact music can have on anyone – it really proves that no matter what age you are, you can do anything you put your mind to!
