Derby relegated as Ramsey suffers injury scare

Derby University Men’s Firsts were relegated from BUCS Midlands 1A Division in a frustrating narrow 1-0 defeat to Loughborough Seconds.

However, the game was overshadowed by an injury to Devante Ramsey, the Derby right-back, who reportedly suffered concussion in an apparently accidental collision before being seen conscious if dazed.

This relegation follows last season’s promotion for Liam Sutcliffe’s side who are winless with two league games remaining.

Arnold Marimbe and Andre Obviagele had both rattled Rex Cannon’s right post as Derby had threatened to go ahead during the first half. But it was not to be for Derby.

The first chance had come to the away side in the eighth minute with Sam Williams’ close-range effort going just wide of the post following strong work by winger Jed Scott.

Loughborough continued their early dominance as Scott fired over the bar in the 22nd minute, a let-off for the hosts.

The home side quickly countered and even after the two efforts against woodwork, defended well for the rest of the half, with centre-back Sidney Martin’s header stifled by the home side.

Derby had the first opportunity of the second period, with striker Obviagele failing to find the net from close range.

But it was Loughborough who would break the deadlock in the 52nd minute, as Scott latched onto Liam Commodore’s quick set and slotted home.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure, but were unable to find an equaliser, as the Loughborough defence remained resolute.

Derby will now look to end the season on a positive as they face Nottingham thirds at Kedleston Road on 4 March.
