Derby men’s seconds seal shootout victory

A dramatic 4-3 shootout saw Derby university men’s seconds gain victory over Nottingham Trent University in the Midlands Conference Cup.

Defender Kyan Anderton netted the winning penalty for Derby, following a handful of early misses in the contest.

A seventh minute bullet header from Trent centre-back Josh Thompson opened the scoring, netting from a corner.

The hosts created a handful of chances shortly after conceding, Jonny Senior struck the crossbar from long range before Nathan Banks headed over the rebound.

After only 15 minutes played, Banks saw his header cleared off the line by Trent defender Michael Olulde.

The away side continued their dominant start to, troubling George Allen in the Derby net, forcing him into a close range save.

The final five minutes of the first half saw Trent’s pressure continue, a double save from Allen and a disallowed Adiafo goal kept Derby in the game.

Within two minutes of the second half, Derby found an equaliser through Banks, when Anderton lofted a long ball over the top, setting him through on goal to score to make it 1-1.

After 64 minutes, Trent’s Joe McLoughlin saw his effort cleared off the line by wing-back Senior.

In the 90th minute, Derby substitute Sam ran through on goal causing Trent defender Cameron Shields to pull him down and take a yellow card.

University of Derby men’s seconds next host University of Warwick men’s thirds away on Wednesday, November 19, in the Midlands 4A division in the British Universities and Colleges Sport.
