Breaking news: John Johnston signs a new deal for Matlock Town

Fan favourite and club captain, John Johnston, has signed a new deal with Matlock Town, keeping him at the club for the upcoming 2024/25 season.

The skipper won Fans’ Player of the Season last year, following an impressive season for the Gladiators.

Commonly referred to by fans as ‘JJ’, the number seven has fast become one of the most popular players in the Matlock side since he joined from Guiseley in October 2022.

Gladiators’ manager, Nicky Law, is clearly a fan of the attacker’s game as well, with the pair working together at Alfreton Town.

Matlock Town released a statement where Law said: “Everyone knows what JJ’s about as a player.

“I had him on loan from Crewe when I was at Alfreton, I personally think I can get more out of him and I guess he knows that too.

“He’s a very good player for this level, and if we can get him better than he was last year we’re going to have a real player on our hands.”

Matlock Town finished the season in 15th place in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, with Johnston playing a pivotal role in steering the club away from the threat of relegation.

John Johnston told the club: “When Nicky called me asking me to stay, I was delighted, and it was a no brainer for me.

“I had a good season personally last year and I have a great affinity with both the club and the fans.

“Nicky told me of the players he’s planning to bring in and what he’s hoping to achieve, and I believe good times lie ahead for the club and it’s a good time to be part of it all.”
