Derby’s Sandy Ryan started off as a Team GB amateur boxer in 2013 – and has reached an exciting time in her career.

During her time with the team, she went on to win medals at world and European level competitions – but her biggest accomplishment with them was winning a gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

With only having gone pro in July 2021, Sandy has now become the WBO welterweight champion after beating Marie Pier Houle on April 22 – with an unanimous decision from the judges after 10 rounds.

And Derby’s Liberal Democrat leader Ajit Atwal, along with councillor Emily Lonsdale, have now put a motion forward to give the athlete the title of Freedom of the City.

A meeting with the rest of Derby’s councillors is set to take place on May 24, where they are hoping to get all of their support to take this further and give Sandy the honour this summer.

Who is Sandy Ryan?

Sandy is a Derby-born professional boxer who debuted her professional career in July  2021 at the age of 27.
