History

Fast X was released in the UK on the 19 May 2023. This film marks the tenth main installment of the Fast and Furious franchise.

As the trailer hinted at multiple characters returning, this was a must watch for die-hard fans.

Additionally, the trailer also introduced a brand-new villain played by Jason Momoa, who is more famously known for his role in Aquaman.

Review of the film

We spoke to film student Anu Sahota, 20, about the Fast X film which she watched on the day it arrived.

“Personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of the recent Fast and Furious movie, yeah, I feel like they’re dragging it out and I’m not sure what it’s become,” said Sahota.

This is a common argument against recent Fast and Furious films as early as the 6th movie. It was in this film, that fans complained about the film not adhering to the laws of physics.

This was due to a car crash in which the main character, Dom, leapt across a highway to tackle/save an airborne Letty [his love interest], and the fall was broken by a car windshield.

However, outlandish special effects and Vin Diesel’s ‘memeable,’ overuse of the word ‘family,’ have not deterred fans. This is backed by the 300 million+ USD that Fast X raked in the opening weekend of the film’s release.

For Sahota, she said that, “The reason for watching it is because obviously I’ve watched it since the beginning and it’s kind of like, full-circle and there are another two films after this, so I feel as though I have to watch it.

“I feel like they’ve forgotten the purpose of the films, with the racing and the team coming together. Obviously that part is still prevalent, but the films are now much more about action and fighting, so they’ve kind of lost the whole meaning of Fast and Furious and the reason they began the films,” she said.

She is not alone in this thought as many fans claim that the films died with Paul Walker’s untimely death in 2013.

Is it Still Worth Watching?

Student Maria Taylor, 21, did not have kind things to say about the Fast and Furious franchise.

“I’m not going to lie; I’ve just never been interested to watch something like this. I see the ads and they always just look nuts. Like does gravity or physics not exist?” she questioned.

“I find it really funny that the main woman, Michelle, said something about not liking Marvel because they make too many films, meanwhile you’ve been a part of the most repetitive film series,” Taylor also stated.

Taylor did not have much else to say about the film, but that she couldn’t bring herself to watch it.

This is not to say that the film is bad and should not be watched by anyone. If a die-hard fan of the franchise already, one may still enjoy Fast X as well.

It is important to note the faults within the film as it appears to do too much. Be it explosions, or cars dragging helicopters, events happening in a row may make the film too confusing for a newcomer.

However, that is not to say that fans will not enjoy the film, as Jason Momoa’s villain character shines. Without spoiling the film, he is an eccentric villain who fans are understandably entertained with to a great degree.

Additionally, Fast X still has its loyal fan base and will be playing in cinemas across the country. A second part to Fast X has been confirmed with a possible trilogy in the works for the franchise.
