Aston Villa have confirmed their second signing of the summer after confirming that Boubacar Kamara has signed for the club on a free.

Kamara, 22, will join Villa when his contract expires at the French club after helping them finish second in Ligue 1 on the final day of the season.

Steven Gerrard’s hunt for a defensive midfielder has been evident since his arrival in November and the signing of Kamara strikes off one task of the summer to-do-list one day after the 2021/22 season’s conclusion.

Kamara has made 100 appearances for Marseille after graduating from the club’s academy in 2016, making him one of the most in-demand young players in European football.

The club announced the news this morning on their official website. Speaking on Kamara, Gerrard expressed his delight at adding Kamara to Coutinho to his summer spending.

“I am delighted that we have been able to attract one of the most promising young talents in European football,” he told the official club website.

“We have a very clear plan to make our team stronger and Bouba is an important part of that.”

The defensive midfielder said his farewells to the Marseille faithful at the weekend as they thumped Strasbourg 4-0 at home to secure Champions League football next season.

Villa have fended off competition from Manchester United and Newcastle United for Kamara’s services. He joins Phillipe Coutinho as summer arrivals at Villa Park so far, with Gerrard looking to re-shape his squad ahead of his first full season in charge.
